What’s a domain, website and hosting?

what is a domain a website and hosting so these are things that I feel like uh really should be common place nowadays uh you know there was definitely a time when people didn’t know how to use computers they didn’t know how to use printers but in the business world people started realizing oh you have to know how to use a computer you have to know how to use email you have to know how to use a printer and I think we’ve arrived at the time when everyone in who is in business needs to know what a domain is a website is and what hosting is and the difference between those three because I’m getting a kind of a reoccurring theme where people will say well I’m not that technically Savvy I don’t really know what these things are well I want to make a video to explain it because it is something that you really if you’re in business you need to know what these things are the differences because you will have to deal with them and it’s something that you know you should know the definition of each one of those things how you the responsibility of them what it means to have those and so I’m going toak break that down in this video so we’re going to start with the very beginning and the very first thing that you always start with is a domain name so domain names are probably something you may be familiar with obviously it’s the actual destination so my website.com you know it’s going to end with a do com it’s going to end with the net there’s a lot of variations it can end with but you go to a place like a GoDaddy or a name chep and you reserve the domain name so that’s like an address a destination on the web that’s just the address it doesn’t mean you have a website doesn’t mean you have it up on the it’s not live nothing like that if you buy a domain name and someone types it in on there it’s not going to take them anywhere so that takes us to step two which is a website website is something that you build and place on the domain but the website will never be on the web where people can find it unless you have the third element which is what’s called hosting hosting is a spot on a specific computer that makes it live on the web so like it’s somewhere that will allow people to actually visit your website so they can go to it now you can put without a server without hosting you can put a website you know locally so you can visit it but if you want other people around the world to be able to visit your website it’s got to be on a server that is hosted so you’re going to need hosting and those things those three things are all separate from each other so you’re going to have a domain that you register and you’re going to pay a specific company to register the domain you’re going to have a developer or or maybe you’re doing it yourself you know like I’m a web developer so you’re going to have somebody who builds you a website and when they build you a website they have to put it on a host it has to be on a server so they can be live on the web and it’s like a sandwich you need all three elements you know the bread the meat the cheese you have to have you me it’s not if it’s just bread it’s not a sandwich if it’s just meat it’s not a sandwich if it’s just cheese it’s not a sandwich you have to have all three of these elements in order to make a website live on the web so I really want to make this video and and I try to make it as simple as possible because you know I it’s it’s no longer you know it’s 2024 it’s no longer the time when you can really claim that you don’t know these things everybody should know this because just have a basic working knowledge I’m not asking for to to know the technical to go into deep of it to you know to do any of the things that I do as a web developer I’m not asking for that just basic simple knowledge of what is a domain what is a website and what is hosting because you need to be able to Parlay and explain and understand these Concepts as a business owner these are something you’re you’re have to deal with websites as a business owner and you’re going need to know these things and the more that you’re a little bit empowered about that the better you can interact with your web developer and so that you know if something is down where do you go oh you have to go redo the domain that’s where the website’s down oh did you pay for the hosting okay that’s why that’s down and you know these are things you’re going to encounter as a business owner and as a website owner so hopefully this video is enlightening if you have more questions or would like to follow up or like a little bit more advice about this I’d be glad to answer it uh but my goal is always to try and simplify and make things more understandable when it comes to web design and marketing for your business online this is joei with Sky Point Studios thank you so much as always for watching my videos and I’m going catch you on the next one.
